Boost Your Salon Growth Instantly with These 5 Google Business Profile Hacks

Let’s be real; most salon owners treat their Google Business Profile (you might still call it Google My Business, and that’s fine – we won’t tell!) like a dusty old shop window…

They set it up back in 2019, uploaded one blurry photo of a treatment room, and haven’t touched it since.

If that sounds like you, don’t panic.  You’re not alone.

But here’s the juicy bit: because most of your competitors are being “lazy” with their digital presence, there is a massive opportunity for you to swoop in and steal the spotlight.

At Salonology, Hollie and I have seen this play out time and time again. We’ve built and sold our own multi-award-winning day spa, so we know exactly how much of a game-changer local SEO can be.

Our “dual-mentor” approach means you get Hollie’s incredible eye for detail and client experience, paired with my obsession with growth and strategy. And today, we’re diving deep into the technical bits that will make your salon the first thing people see when they search for a new stylist or therapist in your area.

Ready to level up your salon growth? Let’s get into the hacks that will leave your competitors in the rearview mirror.

1. The “Desktop SEO Hack”: Metadata is Your Secret Weapon

This is the one most people skip because it requires a tiny bit of extra effort.  Most salon owners snap a photo on their phone and upload it directly to the Google app.  It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s… well, it’s what everyone else is doing.

To really win at salon marketing, you need to go “pro” and use your desktop. Before you upload a single image, you need to rename the file. Google’s “spiders” can’t “see” what’s in a photo, but they can read the filename.

Instead of leaving a photo as IMG_5922.jpg, rename it to something descriptive and keyword-rich, like blonde-balayage-expert-manchester.jpg or luxury-facial-treatment-leeds.jpg.

But wait, there’s more!

If you’re on a PC, right-click the image, go to “Properties,” and then “Details.” Here, you can actually add metadata tags, a title, and even a rating to the file itself. By embedding these details into the image before it even hits Google, you are feeding the search engine exactly what it wants to see: relevance, location, and authority.

It’s a small step, but it’s a giant leap for your salon growth.

2. The Power of 100: Why Quantity Triggers the Algorithm

If you have five photos on your profile, Google thinks you’re a hobby…

If you have 100, Google thinks you’re a local authority.

We always tell our members in the Gold Club to aim for at least 100 high-quality images on their profile. Why? Because Google loves data. The more images you have, the more time potential clients spend “dwelling” on your profile. High dwell time signals to Google that your business is interesting and relevant, which in turn pushes you higher up the search results.

Don’t just stick to “after” shots of hair.  Show the “before.”  Show the team laughing in the staff room.  Show a close-up of the luxury coffee you serve.  Show the front door so people know exactly what to look for when they arrive.

Remember, people buy from people.  A profile packed with 100+ images creates a “safe space” for a potential client to explore before they’ve even stepped through your door.  It builds that all-important Know, Like, and Trust factor (KLTF) that we talk about so much here at Salonology.

3. Automate Your Review Engine

We all know reviews are the lifeblood of how to grow your salon. In fact, 97% of people say reviews influence their buying decisions. But let’s be real – asking for reviews can feel a bit awkward, and remembering to do it when you’re back-to-back with clients is nearly impossible.

The hack?

Stop doing it manually and start automating it.

Your booking software (whether you use Fresha, Phorest, Vagaro, or anything else) almost certainly has a feature to send an automated “thank you” text or email after an appointment.  Use it!  But don’t just say “Thanks for coming.”  Make it easy for them.

Include a direct link to your Google review page. If you make a client work to find where to leave a review, they won’t do it. If you put it right under their thumb while they’re still feeling that “new hair high,” your conversion rate will skyrocket.

A steady stream of fresh reviews tells Google your business is active and thriving.  A burst of 20 reviews in one week followed by six months of silence looks suspicious.  Consistency is king.  If you’re struggling with this, check out our guide on unlocking client loyalty for more tips on keeping your fans engaged.

4. Deep-Dive Your Categories and Services

When you set up your profile, you chose a primary category (like “Hair Salon” or “Beauty Salon”). But did you know you can add secondary categories too?

If you’re a hair salon that also specialises in extensions, make sure “Hair Extension Technician” is a secondary category.  If you’re a beauty salon that does amazing bridal makeup, add “Make-up Artist.”  This allows you to show up in a much wider variety of local searches.

But the real “growth hack” is in the Services section.  Google now allows you to list your full menu with descriptions and prices.  Most owners just tick the boxes for “Haircut” or “Manicure.”  Be different.  Write a juicy, enticing description for each service.  Use words that evoke emotion.  Instead of “Full Head Highlights,” try “Bespoke Full Head Artistry – tailored to your skin tone and lifestyle.”

This doesn’t just help with SEO; it helps with conversions.  When a client sees exactly what they’re getting and how much it costs, the barrier to booking disappears.

5. Use GBP Posts Like a Mini Social Media Feed

Google has a “Posts” feature that is woefully underused by the industry.  Think of it as a cross between a Facebook post and a mini-advert.

You can post “What’s New” updates, “Offers,” or “Events.” These posts show up directly in the search results when someone finds your business.

Here’s how to win with posts:

  • Use a Call to Action (CTA): Every post should have a “Book Now” or “Call Now” button.
  • Update Weekly: Posts expire after a while, so keep them fresh.
  • Showcase Your Expertise: Share a “Tip of the Week” or a transformation.

While your competitors are only posting to Instagram (where the algorithm hides their content from 90% of their followers), you’ll be posting directly onto the world’s biggest search engine.  It’s a no-brainer.

Putting It All Together

Growing a salon doesn’t have to be about grand, expensive gestures.  Often, it’s about these “small steps for big results.”  By spending just 30 minutes a week on your Google Business Profile, you are positioning yourself as a professional, trustworthy, and high-quality choice in a sea of average competitors.

At Salonology, we’re all about helping you build a happy, sustainable business that works for you. Whether you’re a solo pro or managing a large team, these technical tweaks are the foundation of a modern marketing strategy.
