How to Find and Attract Your Dream Salon Clients (And Ditch the Tire-Kickers)

Salon Mentors Ryan Power and Hollie Power

Let’s be honest for a second. We’ve all been there.

You’re standing in your salon, checking the clock for the third time in ten minutes. Your 2:00 PM appointment, a first-timer who booked via a discount code, is now fifteen minutes late. Your phone pings with a DM asking, “How much for a full head of highlights? And do you have any deals on?”

It’s exhausting, isn’t it? These “tire-kickers” drain your energy, squeeze your margins, and, quite frankly, take the joy out of the job you love.

But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be this way. You don’t have to accept every single person who wants to sit in your chair. In fact, if you want to know how to grow a salon business that actually makes you happy (and profitable!), the secret is in being selective.

At Salonology, we talk a lot about becoming the “Obvious Choice.” It’s the idea that when your dream client sees your marketing, they don’t just think you’re “fine”, they think, “Oh, they are exactly for me.”

So, let’s dive into how you can stop casting a wide, desperate net and start attracting the high-quality, respectful clients who value your worth.

1. Define Your “Unicorn” (Who ARE They, Really?)

If you try to talk to everyone, you end up talking to no one. It’s one of the biggest salon marketing tips we share with our Gold Club members.

Stop thinking about “anyone with hair” or “anyone who needs a facial.”

Think about your absolute favourite client. You know the one, they show up early, they trust your professional advice, they pay full price without blinking, and they leave you a glowing review before they’ve even reached their car.

Ask yourself:

  • What services do they love? (Are you the queen of lived-in blondes? The king of skin transformations?)
  • What do they value? (Is it a quiet, meditative space or a high-energy, chatty vibe?)
  • What are their pain points? (Maybe they’re a busy mum who needs “express” luxury, or a professional woman who wants to feel powerful.)

When you get specific about who you want, your marketing becomes a magnet.

2. The ‘Obvious Choice’ Mindset

Most salons market themselves by listing their services and their prices. “Cut and Blow Dry – £45.”

But guess what? A price list is not a marketing strategy. It’s an invitation for people to price-shop you.

To be the “Obvious Choice,” you need to shift the conversation from price to value and emotion. People don’t buy a haircut; they buy how they feel when they look in the mirror the next morning. They buy the confidence to walk into a boardroom or the relaxation they desperately need after a hellish week.

(And yes, sometimes they buy the fact that you’re the only person who understands their obsession with 90s pop music or that you make the best latte in town. Don’t be afraid to show your personality!)

When your marketing speaks to those emotions, you stop being a commodity and start being a destination.

3. Audit Your Marketing (Stop Casting a Net, Start Using a Spear)

Your social media shouldn’t be a random collection of “before and afters.” It should be a curated gallery that screams your niche.

If you want to attract high-end color clients, stop posting pictures of £15 eyebrow waxes. It’s confusing for the algorithm and even more confusing for your dream clients.

Pro-tip: Use your captions to “pre-qualify” people. Instead of “Love this transformation!”, try something like: “I specialize in helping busy professionals achieve low-maintenance, luxury color that looks expensive for 12 weeks.”

Boom. You’ve just told the tire-kickers (who want a cheap fix every 4 weeks) that you aren’t for them, while signaling to your dream client that you are the expert they’ve been looking for.

4. The ‘No-B*tch’ Policy (Setting Your Boundaries)

This might sound a bit “fire and brimstone,” but stay with me. To make room for your dream clients, you have to stop tolerating the ones who drain you.

We’ve long advocated for a “No-B*tch” policy (and yes, we mean that in the most loving way possible). If a client is consistently disrespectful to your team, late for appointments, or haggles over every penny, they are actually costing you money.

By keeping them on your books, you are blocking a “Dream Client” from being able to get an appointment.

Set clear boundaries. Have a robust cancellation policy. Charge what you are worth. The right people will respect you for it; the wrong people will leave. And honestly? Let them.

5. Clone Your Best Clients

The fastest way to find more dream clients? Look at the ones you already have.

High-quality people usually hang out with other high-quality people. If you have a client you absolutely adore, tell them! Say, “I love having you in the chair, Susan. I’m looking to grow my books with more people just like you: if you have any friends who need a hair transformation, I’d love to look after them.”

You can even create a “referral gift” that feels like a reward, not a bribe. Think: a luxury retail product or a complimentary treatment upgrade, rather than just “10% off.”

6. Consistency is Key

Growth doesn’t happen overnight. It’s about showing up every single day as the expert you are. Whether it’s through Facebook marketing or making sure your consultation forms are top-notch, every small step builds your reputation as the “Obvious Choice.”

When you align your brand, your boundaries, and your marketing, something magical happens. The “tire-kickers” start to disappear because they realize they don’t fit into your world. In their place, your “Unicorns” start showing up: ready to pay, ready to stay, and ready to help you thrive.
