Profit over Presence: How to Add £10,000 to Your Bottom Line While Working Less

Salon mentors and Salonology co-founders Hollie and Ryan Power

We’ve all been there.

You’re standing in your salon, feet aching, phone pinging with “can you just squeeze me in?” messages, and your head is spinning with a to-do list that’s longer than a Saturday morning highlights queue.

You’re exhausted, but you’re wearing that “busy” badge like a medal of honour.

After all, if you’re busy, you’re successful, right?

Er, right?!

Well, here is the truth that might be a little hard to swallow: being busy is not the same as being profitable.

In fact, for many salon owners, being “present” every single hour the doors are open is actually the very thing holding their business back from the next level.

At Salonology, we talk to hundreds of owners who are trapped in the “busy trap.”

They think that if they aren’t there, the wheels will fall off.  They think that to make an extra £10,000, they need to do an extra 100 hours of hair or treatments.

But what if I told you that the secret to adding £10,000 to your bottom line actually involves you being in the salon less?

It sounds like a dream, doesn’t it?

But it’s exactly how we’ve built our businesses and how we help our Gold Club members transform theirs.

Let’s dive into how you can shift from being the most overworked person in the building to the most profitable one.

The Fallacy of “Working More to Earn More”

In the early days, you have to grind.  We get it.  We’ve been there: Hollie and I built and sold a multi-award-winning day spa from the ground up, so we know what the hustle feels like.

But at some point, the hustle stops serving you and starts stealing from you.

The “more work = more money” mindset is a linear trap.

If you only earn money when you are physically performing a service, your income is capped by the number of hours in a day and the physical stamina of your body.

If you want to add a significant chunk of profit: like £10,000 or more: to your bank account this year, you can’t do it by just working harder.

You have to work smarter.

You have to move from “presence” to “profit.”

Hollie Power Salon Mentor

The Hollie Power Approach: Two Mornings a Week

I want to share a little secret about my partner in crime and co-founder, Hollie.

Hollie only worked two mornings a week in our day spa and salon by the end. That’s it.

Did that mean the business was failing?  Quite the opposite.

By stepping back, she created the space to lead, to strategise, and to focus on the things that actually move the needle.

When you are stuck behind a chair or in a treatment room for 40 hours a week, you aren’t a CEO.

You’re an employee of your own company (and often a very poorly paid one when you calculate your actual hourly rate).

Stepping back isn’t about being “lazy.”

It’s about building a sustainable, happy business that doesn’t rely on your physical presence to survive. It’s about creating a “family vibe” where your team feels empowered to step up because you’ve given them the space to do so.

Plug the Profit Leaks

Before you try to bring in more money, you need to make sure you aren’t losing what you already have. Most salons have “leaky buckets.”  You’re pouring in revenue at the top, but profit is dripping out of holes at the bottom.

If you want to add £10,000 to your bottom line, the easiest place to start is by looking at your margins.

Review Your Pricing

When was the last time you really looked at your numbers?

Not just “what does the salon down the road charge,” but what does it actually cost you to deliver that service?

With inflation and rising supply costs, many owners are actually making less profit per treatment than they were two years ago.

A small, strategic price increase across the board: even just a couple of pounds per service: can add thousands to your bottom line over a year without you doing a single extra minute of work.

Control the  Waste

Are your stylists using half a tube of colour when they only need a quarter?

Is your stock cupboard a free-for-all?  Waste is the silent killer of salon profit.

Systemising your stock usage and using salon software to track every drop can save you a fortune.

Leverage Your Team (The “CEO” Shift)

If you have a team, they are your biggest asset and your biggest expense.  To add £10,000 in profit while working less, you need to maximise their performance too.

Stop being the “fixer.”  If a client calls with a complaint, do you jump in to handle it?  If a shelf needs dusting, do you grab the cloth?  Every time you do a task that someone else could do, you are devaluing your time.

Focus on training your team to be high-performers.  When your team increases their average bill by just 10% through better consultations and upselling, that profit goes straight to the business.

You aren’t doing the work; they are.

Your job is to provide the roadmap and the support to help them flourish.

We always say that we offer a “dual-mentor” approach at Salonology because we know that managing people is one of the hardest parts of the job. But once you get that culture right, the freedom it gives you is life-changing.

High-Margin “Quiet” Money

There is money sitting in your salon right now that doesn’t require you to be “present” at all… it’s “quiet money”.

Retail Strategy

If a client walks out of your salon without the products they need to maintain their look at home, you’ve done them a disservice: and you’ve left profit on the table.

Retail is high-margin and requires zero extra “service time.” If you and your team can get consistent with retail recommendations, that £10,000 goal starts to look very easy to achieve.

The Power of Re-booking

It costs six times more to get a new client than it does to keep an existing one.

If you can increase your client retention by just 10%, your profit will soar.  Why?  Because you aren’t spending money on marketing to fill those gaps.  You’re simply keeping the “bucket” full.

Relentless Focus on High Yielding Services

Not all services are created equally.

Actually, some of the services and treatments you offer are probably five or six times more profitable than others.

Determine which they are… and promote those above all others.

That’s where the smart money is.

Overcoming the “Guilt” of Freedom

One of the biggest hurdles we see with the salon owners we mentor is guilt.

You feel guilty for leaving early.

You feel guilty for not being the one to do Mrs. Smith’s hair.

You feel like you’re “cheating” if you aren’t exhausted.

But here is a friendly reminder: You started this business for freedom.  You started it to have a better lifestyle, to support your family, and to do work you love.  You didn’t start it to become a slave to a column.

Achievement doesn’t have to be hard.

In fact, the most successful salon owners we know are the ones who have mastered the art of being “productive” rather than “present.”  They’ve realised that their definition of success doesn’t have to be the same as everyone else’s.

Small Steps for Big Results

Adding £10,000 to your bottom line doesn’t happen overnight, but it does happen through small, consistent steps.

  1. Audit your time:  For one week, track everything you do. How much of it must be done by you?
  2. Review your top 3 services:  Are they profitable? If not, change the price or the process so you’re prioritising the highest yielding treatments and services.
  3. Set a retail goal: Challenge your team (and yourself) to suggest one product to every single client.
  4. Schedule your “CEO time”: Even if it’s just one morning a week to start with.  Get out of the salon, go to a coffee shop, and look at your numbers.

Ready to Build Your Freedom?

If you’re sitting there thinking, “this sounds great, but I have no idea where to start,” don’t panic. We’ve been exactly where you are, and we’ve created a roadmap to help you get out of this trap.

We’ve put together a special training called The Freedom Formula. It’s designed specifically for salon owners who want to scale their profits while reclaiming their time.

No fluff, no “corporate” jargon: just the real-world strategies we used to build our own successful businesses.

We think you’ll love it. It’s the first step toward building a business that serves you, rather than you serving it.
