Unlocking Client Loyalty: Why Most Salon Marketing Fails (and how to fix it)

Hollie Power Salon Mentor

Truth; you didn’t get into the hair and beauty industry because you had a burning passion for algorithms, hashtags, or spending three hours trying to figure out why your latest Facebook post only got a ‘like’ from your mum (thanks, Mum, love you).

You got into this because you’re a creator.  You’re a transformation specialist.  You’re the person who makes someone feel like a million dollars when they’ve walked in feeling like fifty pence.

But here’s the rub: you can be the most talented stylist or therapist on the planet, but if your salon marketing is falling flat, your columns will have more gaps than a toddler’s front teeth.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re shouting into a digital void, you’re not alone. Most salon owners find marketing to be the least enjoyable part of their business. It feels heavy, it feels confusing, and quite frankly, it feels a bit “salesy.”

But what if we told you that the reason most salon marketing tips don’t work isn’t because you aren’t “doing” enough? It’s because you’re doing the wrong things. Today, we’re peeling back the curtain on why most marketing fails and, more importantly, how to fix it so you can build the kind of client loyalty that keeps your diary full for months in advance.

The Cardinal Marketing Sin: Being Boring

We’re going to start with a tough-love truth bomb: the biggest sin in marketing isn’t a blurry photo or a typo (though we do love a bit of spellcheck). The biggest sin is being boring.

If your social media feed is just a graveyard of “10% off” graphics and generic “we have appointments available” posts, you are effectively invisible. In a world where your clients are scrolling through hundreds of posts a day, “average” is the same as “silent.”

Clients don’t fall in love with a logo. They don’t form a lifelong bond with a price list. They fall in love with you. This is why we always scream from the rooftops that people buy from people.

The Personality-Led Revolution

To unlock true client loyalty, your marketing needs a pulse. It needs a personality. It needs to feel like a conversation over a glass of fizz, not a corporate lecture.

When you start using personality-led content, everything changes. Instead of just showing a finished hair colour, tell the story of the client who came in needing a boost after a tough week. Instead of a photo of a treatment room, share a video of you doing your “morning prep dance” (even if you think you’re a terrible dancer, especially then!).

Authenticity is the ultimate antidote to “boring.” When you show the person behind the brand, you stop being a commodity and start being a destination.

The Holy Trinity: Know, Like, and Trust

If you want a client to move from “random stranger on the internet” to “loyal regular who brings you biscuits,” they have to pass through three distinct stages. We call these the KLTFs (Know, Like, and Trust Factors).

1. The ‘Know’ Factor

This is the awareness stage. Do people even know you exist? This is where your basic salon marketing comes in, your Google Business Profile, your local SEO, and your social media presence. But “knowing” is just the handshake. It’s the “hello, I’m here.”

2. The ‘Like’ Factor

This is where most salons drop the ball. Being “liked” isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being relatable. Do your values align with theirs? Do you seem like someone they’d actually enjoy spending two hours with while their highlights develop? This is where your personality-led content does the heavy lifting. (And yes, referencing your love for 90s pop or your obsession with your French bulldog helps here!)

3. The ‘Trust’ Factor

Trust is the final hurdle. Before someone hands over their hard-earned cash (and their hair/skin/nails), they need to know you won’t mess it up. Trust is built through social proof, reviews, before-and-after photos, and showing your expertise. If you can prove you’ve solved problems for people just like them, the “Trust” factor clicks into place.

The Rule of 7 to 20: Why One Post Isn’t Enough

Have you ever posted a brilliant offer, waited for the phone to ring, and… nothing? You might have thought, “Well, that didn’t work,” and given up.

Here’s the thing: marketing is a marathon, not a sprint. On average, it takes between 7 and 20 “touches” (exposures to your brand or offer) before a client feels ready to book.

Think about your own shopping habits. Do you buy the first pair of shoes you see in an ad? Probably not. You see them on Instagram, then you see a friend wearing them, then you see an email about a sale, then you check the reviews, and then you buy.

Your clients are exactly the same. They need to see you consistently. This doesn’t mean you need to be “pushy”; it just means you need to be present. A “touch” could be:

  • An Instagram Story showing your morning coffee.
  • A helpful email with tips on how to keep hair healthy in the summer.
  • A Facebook post celebrating a team member’s birthday.
  • A text message reminder that they are due for their next appointment.

Consistency is the secret sauce. If you’re only marketing when your diary is empty, you’re already too late. You need to be building those touches when you’re busy, so the pipeline stays full.

Why Your Retention Strategy Might Be Leaking

Marketing isn’t just about getting new people through the door; it’s about keeping the ones you’ve already got. It is significantly cheaper (and easier!) to keep an existing client than to find a new one.

If your retention is low, it’s often because the “journey” ends the moment the client leaves the salon. To fix this, you need a system that continues the conversation. This is why we focus so heavily on client retention strategies that go beyond the treatment chair.

Ask yourself:

  • Do you have an automated “thank you” message?
  • Are you asking for reviews within 24 hours?
  • Do you have a loyalty program that actually rewards the right behaviours?
  • Are you sending “we miss you” prompts to clients who haven’t been in for a while?

If the answer is “no,” don’t panic. These are simple fixes that create massive results.

How to Fix It (Without Losing Your Mind)

We know what you’re thinking: “Hollie, Ryan, this sounds like a lot of work, and I still have a salon to run!”

We hear you. We’ve been there. We built and sold a multi-award-winning spa ourselves, so we know that “overwhelmed” feeling all too well. The key is to stop trying to reinvent the wheel every single day.

This is exactly why we created the Gold Club. It’s our “safe space” for salon owners who want to grow their business without the burnout. Inside, we provide a roadmap for everything from pricing to team management.

One of our members’ favourite features is The Oracle. Each month, we provide “done-for-you” marketing inspiration. We give you the promotional packages, the email templates, the blog content, and the talking points you need to stay consistent without having to stare at a blank screen for hours. It’s like having a marketing department in your pocket (but much cheaper and with better jokes).

If you’re ready to stop the “shouting at the void” and start building a business that gives you both freedom and profit, we think you’ll love it. You can find out more about the Gold Club here.

Final Thoughts: Small Steps for Big Results

Unlocking client loyalty doesn’t require a degree in marketing or a million-pound budget. It requires a bit of heart, a dash of personality, and a commitment to showing up consistently.

Start small. This week, try posting one video of yourself talking to the camera. Share a “behind the scenes” look at your salon. Send a personalised “thinking of you” email to a client you haven’t seen in a while.

Remember, people don’t just want a haircut or a facial; they want to feel seen, understood, and cared for. When you bring that “human” touch to your salon marketing, you won’t just fill your diary: you’ll build a community.

You’ve got this! And if you ever need a bit of a nudge (or a roadmap), we’re right here.

Stay fabulous,
