7 Salon Marketing Tips That Actually Work (and how to implement them today)

Salon mentor Ryan Power

Let’s be honest for a second – the world of salon marketing can feel like a bit of a circus.

One minute you’re being told you need to be a TikTok sensation, the next you’re being nagged about SEO, and somewhere in between, you’re just trying to find five minutes to eat a soggy sandwich in the staff room.

It’s overwhelming, isn’t it?  But here’s the thing: most salon marketing is, well… boring.

If you’re scrolling through Instagram and seeing nothing but “pretty hair pics” or “nails of the day” with a couple of emojis and a generic “DM to book” caption, you’re witnessing the #1 marketing sin. It’s beige. It’s forgettable. And it’s definitely not how to grow your salon in 2026.

We’ve been in your shoes. We know that running a salon is a beautiful thing when it works, but it’s a total head-scratcher when the chairs are empty. That’s why we’ve pulled together these salon marketing tips that actually move the needle. No fluff, no “corporate speak,” just real-world advice from people who have built and sold award-winning salons.

Ready to learn how to make more money in your salon without losing your mind? Let’s dive in.

1. Stop Being a Wallflower (Inject Your Personality)

People don’t buy services; they buy people.  In an industry as intimate as ours, your clients are literally trusting you with their appearance and their confidence.  They want to know who is behind the scissors or the waxing spatula.

If your social media feed looks like a catalogue, you’re missing a trick.

Start showing your face!  Talk to the camera, share your “why,” and don’t be afraid to be a bit silly.

Whether it’s a bit of bad dancing behind the scenes or a cheeky lip-syncing reel about the joys of back-to-back foils, that human connection is what builds trust.

How to implement it today: Record a 30-second video on your phone right now. Introduce yourself, tell people one weird fact about you (like your secret obsession with 90s pop), and fire it over to your Instagram Stories.

2. Turn Your Google Business Profile into a Lead Machine

When someone searches for a “salon near me,” they aren’t looking at your Instagram first, they’re looking at Google. If your Google Business Profile (GBP) is gathering digital dust, you’re practically handing your neighbours the keys to your potential clients.

This is the most underrated of all salon marketing tips. You need fresh photos, up-to-date opening hours, and, most importantly, reviews.

How to implement it today: Go to your GBP and upload three new photos of your salon interior or a recent transformation. Then, pick your three most loyal clients and send them a personal WhatsApp asking for a quick review. It takes two minutes and boosts your local ranking instantly.

3. Video Content: Focus on Process, Not Just Perfection

We all love a “Ta-da!” reveal, but in 2026, clients want to see the journey. They want to know what happens during a consultation, how you mix your colours, and the care you take during a treatment. This “process-led” content positions you as the expert and takes the mystery out of the experience.

It doesn’t have to be a cinematic masterpiece. J ust prop your phone up and film a time-lapse of your morning setup or a snippet of a consultation (with permission, of course!).

How to implement it today: Film a “Day in the Life” snippet.  Show the coffee run, the tidy-up, and the finished look of your first client.  Edit it together in a simple Reel with some upbeat music.  It shows you’re busy, professional, and approachable.

4. The Fortune is in the Follow-up (Email & SMS)

If you’re only talking to your clients when they’re sitting in your chair, you’re leaving money on the table. How to make more money in your salon often comes down to increasing the frequency of visits.

A friendly “We miss you” text or a monthly email packed with value (not just “Book now!”) keeps you top-of-mind.

Share tips on how to maintain their look at home or announce a new “Stylist’s Pick” product of the month.

How to implement it today: Look at your booking system for anyone who hasn’t visited in the last 12 weeks. Send them a personal “Thinking of you” message. No hard sell, just letting them know you’d love to see them again soon.

5. Create a Referral System That Actually Works

Word of mouth is the holy grail of salon growth, but you can’t just wait for it to happen. You have to incentivise it. Give your “raving fans” a reason to shout your name from the rooftops.

Instead of a generic “10% off,” try something more exciting…

Maybe a “Bestie Bundle” where both the referrer and the new client get a complimentary luxury treatment upgrade. It feels like a gift rather than a discount.

How to implement it today: Design a simple “Recommend a Friend” card on Canva or grab a template from our marketing resources. Print a few out or create a digital version to send to your top 10 clients.

6. Local SEO: Own Your Postcode

You don’t need to reach the whole world; you just need to reach the people within a 10-mile radius of your front door. Use local keywords on your website. Instead of just saying “Hair Salon,” say “The Best Blonde Specialist in [Your Town].”

This is a key part of how to grow your salon sustainably. When your website speaks the language of your local community, Google rewards you with better visibility.

How to implement it today: Check your website’s “About” page.  Does it mention your town or city?  If not, add it in a natural way. “Proudly serving the lovely people of [Your Town] since 2018” works wonders.

7. Stop Reinventing the Wheel (Use The Oracle)

One of the biggest hurdles for salon owners is simply running out of ideas. You’re creative, but trying to come up with 30 days of marketing content every single month is exhausting.

This is where our members in the Gold Club have a massive advantage. We created something called The Oracle. It’s our monthly “done-for-you” marketing inspiration hub.  Every month, Hollie puts together promotional packages, blog ideas, email templates, and talking points so our members never have to stare at a blank screen again.  It’s like having a marketing department in your pocket.

How to implement it today: Stop trying to do it all alone! If you’re feeling stuck, head over to the Salonology Gold Club and see how we can help you get that roadmap for success.

Final Thoughts: Small Steps for Big Results

Marketing doesn’t have to be a scary monster under the bed. It’s just about telling your story, showing your passion, and making it easy for people to say “yes” to you.

Remember, you don’t have to do all seven of these today.  Pick one. Just one!  Master it, then move on to the next. Before you know it, you’ll have a business that doesn’t just survive but flourishes.

We know it’s challenging, but we also know how beautiful it is when you finally achieve that freedom and fulfillment you’ve been working so hard for.

If you’re looking for a safe space to grow, a family vibe, and a community that actually “gets it,” we think you’ll love what we’ve built here at Salonology.  Don’t be afraid to get in touch if you need a helping hand!

Much love,
